How NIOS question papers work

NIOS holds two public exam blocks a year — around April–May and October–November — plus On-Demand Examinations (ODE) for eligible learners through most of the year. Each subject is examined by code (for example 211, 302), so always search papers by your subject code, not just the subject name.

Your final subject result combines the written exam with the Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs) you submit through the year, so past papers tell you what the written portion looks like — they are not the whole assessment. The exam side of each subject on this site links the paper pattern where we have verified it.

Using past papers when you study alone

  1. Start with your subject page — Open your subject on this site (by code) for the most frequently examined topics and the paper pattern before you attempt a full paper.
  2. Attempt one full paper untimed — The first paper is for discovering the format — question types, sections, and choice within sections — not for scoring yourself.
  3. Then switch to timed attempts — NIOS papers reward finishing: attempt later papers in the official duration and practise choosing between optional questions quickly.
  4. Check answers against the marking pattern — Where a marking scheme or model answer is available on the official site, score step-by-step, not just final answers.

ODE papers differ: On-Demand Examination papers are drawn from a question bank and are not published the way public-exam papers are. Prepare from public-exam past papers — the syllabus is the same — and confirm current ODE rules on the official NIOS portal.
